Maintaining your motorbike over winter

12 October 2022

With autumn officially upon us, opportunities to hit the open road on your beloved motorbike are becoming few and far between. With the weather getting colder and wetter, and the days getting shorter, the time has almost come to hang up your helmet and gloves for one year.

Using your motorbike less, or at all, during the winter doesn’t just keep you safe, it keeps your motorbike in better condition. Winter can after all be particularly hard on your motorcycle. With that being said, you shouldn’t lock your motorbike away and forget about it until spring.

The winter months are the ideal time to undertake those motorbike maintenance tasks. Here we reveal how to maintain your motorbike like a pro over the winter months.

Keep your battery charged

Keeping the battery of your motorbike charged is easier said than done with the roads out of bounds during winter. Check your battery regularly when the cold weather sets in to ensure it remains in the best possible condition for your next ride.

Start by examining the voltage of the battery, not forgetting to lubricate its terminals to keep all its components in tact and free from dirt. If you find that your motorbike battery is draining a little too quickly, now’s the time to get it replaced.

Make sure parts are in working order

It’s not just your motorbike battery that will benefit from regular lubrication. All the moving parts that make your motorbike what it is need attention, with the lubrication of moving components (such as the throttle, chain, brakes and pedals) an essential task over winter.

Check and change your fluids

Regular fluid level checks are part and parcel of ongoing motorbike maintenance, so don’t let things slip during the colder season. Check and change your engine oil and filter, and do the same for your coolant to keep your system as efficient as it should be all winter long.

Consider motorbike storage

Keeping your bike undercover when it isn’t in use during winter is vital. Protecting your bike from the elements will reduce the effects of the cooler weather on your battery and cooling system as well as prevent moisture from making a meal of your bodywork.

It is important to note however that even the best garage often doesn’t provide the protection your motorbike deserves. Storing your motorbike with SCRACS offers the best solution for your needs, bike and budget over winter.

Starting from as little as £15 (plus VAT) per week, our motorbike storage facility is safe, secure and climate controlled. We’ll even take care of the maintenance tasks mentioned above to ensure your motorbike is better than ever and ready to ride once winter has come to an end.
